[Spoiler alert] (Do not read if you haven’t yet watched the movie)
The Hodgsons weren’t being haunted by the nun. It was was the house which was haunted by it.
The nun/Valak was actually using the Hodgsons’ to lure the Warrens’ to the Enfield house so as to complete the plan of killing Ed Warren i.e. what Lorraine saw in her vision at the Amityville.
Like explained in the first movie ( The Conjuring ), the nun, then, uses the lost spirit of Bill Wilkins to infest Janet. Oppress her. And then the nun herself possesses her. The nun also tries to oppress the whole family.
This gains a lot of Public attention and thus, the Warren’s come to know about it. They were hesitant on taking the case ( since Lorraine was scared ) but agreed just to investigate.
And to why the nun wanted to kill Ed?
So as to stop the Warrens’ from continuing their work. Lorraine wouldn’t be able to continue her work if Ed died, which the nun knew, and wanted to do it so as the demonic spirits can start haunting at more places.
